Gyllyngvase, known locally as Gylly, is Falmouth's main town beach: a crescent of golden sand on the south coast of Cornwall, facing out over Falmouth Bay with Pendennis Point and its Tudor castle a short walk to the east. Unlike the north coast, this side of the county is sheltered from the big Atlantic swells, so the water is usually calm and clear, which is why Gylly is busy with swimmers, paddleboarders and kayakers through much of the year and has a hardy crowd of all-year sea swimmers. A café sits on the beach itself and the seafront road behind it has parking and buses into town. Southerly and south-easterly winds push small waves and chop into the bay; a north or north-westerly keeps it flat and glassy. RNLI lifeguards cover the beach in the summer season. The live beach webcam above looks across the sand to the bay, handy for checking the crowds and the state of the water before walking down.
