West Wittering is a wide, south-facing sandy beach on the Manhood Peninsula in West Sussex, at the entrance to Chichester Harbour, with the sand spit of East Head curling round the harbour mouth at its western end. It has been one of the home beaches of English windsurfing since the sport arrived in the 1970s and is still a busy spot for windsurfers and kitesurfers: south-westerly winds blow cross-shore along the beach, and at low tide the sandbanks create areas of flat water, while the harbour entrance has strong tidal streams that sweep in and out with every tide. Watersports users share the beach with large numbers of families in summer, and seasonal zoning and restrictions on kiting apply, so check the current rules before rigging. The beach and its big grass car park are run by a local estate; on hot weekends the car park fills early and the approach roads queue back for miles. Behind the sand are beach huts and dunes, and East Head is a National Trust nature site. The Channel here warms to about 18 °C in August.
