Widemouth Bay lies about three miles south of Bude on the north coast of Cornwall: a wide, west-facing beach of sand and rock ledges with a coast road running right behind it. It is one of the go-to surf beaches of the Bude area and a regular base for surf schools, because the mix of sandbanks and low reefs offers waves for every level, from gentle white water on the inside to more powerful peaks over the rocks at either end. Black Rock marks the southern part of the bay. The beach takes swell from south-west round to north-west and is best with an easterly or light wind; a strong westerly blows it out. At high tide the sand narrows and the rocky platforms are covered, while low tide uncovers rock pools that are good for children but sharp underfoot when you are walking out with a board. Rips can pull hard near the rocks. Car parks and a few cafés line the road. Sea temperature here follows the rest of north Cornwall, peaking at around 16–17 °C in late summer.
