Fort Lauderdale Beach runs along A1A on the barrier island east of the city, a long, straight beach backed by a low white wave wall, palm trees and a promenade busy with joggers, cyclists and skaters. Las Olas Boulevard meets the sea at its centre, and the corner of Las Olas and A1A is home to the Elbo Room, the beach bar that opened in 1938 and became famous when the 1960 film Where the Boys Are made Fort Lauderdale the spring-break capital of America. The live beach cam on this page is the Elbo Room's own stream, with its weather readout, looking out over the road and the sand. The beach faces east to the open Atlantic but sits in the lee of the Bahamas, so the sea is usually calm, clear and good for swimming, with lifeguard towers spaced along the sand; winter cold fronts and the occasional autumn swell bring chop and small surf, and east winds can push sargassum seaweed ashore in summer. Port Everglades, with its cruise ships, lies just to the south. Expect water around 23 °C in February and about 30 °C in August.
