Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park, at the south-western tip of Key West, has the island's best natural beach and the one locals recommend for an afternoon by the water. Behind the beach stands the brick fort itself, built in the mid-nineteenth century and held by Union forces throughout the Civil War, and a shady picnic ground of Australian pines and sea grape separates the two. The shoreline is coarse sand and crushed coral rather than powder, with rocky patches, so water shoes help; in return the water is clearer than anywhere else on Key West, and the rock groins and nearshore reef make it the island's best place to snorkel from shore. The Gulf and the Atlantic meet off this point, the channel used by cruise ships passes close by, and sunsets over the water are a fixture. Most days the sea is calm, but strong east and south-east winds bring chop, and currents run along the point.
