Ocean City is Maryland's only stretch of Atlantic coast, a resort town spread along about ten miles of the barrier island between the Ocean City Inlet and the Delaware line. Its southern end is the classic part: a wooden boardwalk of roughly three miles lined with arcades, French fry stands and hotels, with Trimper's amusement rides and the fishing pier and Ferris wheel by the inlet. The inlet itself was opened by a hurricane in 1933 and later fixed with jetties; across it lies Assateague Island, home of the wild horses. The live cam on this page is a Windy webcam on the Ocean 1 Hotel, and its daytime frames look along the beach towards the pier and the Ferris wheel. In summer the beach is patrolled by the Ocean City Beach Patrol, whose lifeguard stands are spaced every few blocks, and swimming is only allowed when they are on duty. The surf is a beach break that is small most of the summer and livelier with autumn nor'easters and passing hurricanes; the inlet jetty area is the best-known break. North-bound streets end in public beach access along the whole town. The ocean is about 4 °C in February and 25 °C in August.
