Southbroom is a small village on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, about 143 km south-west of Durban and roughly halfway between Port Shepstone (23 km) and Port Edward (18 km). It lies between Ramsgate to the north and Marina Beach to the south, bounded by the uMbizane River on one side and the Kaba River on the other. This beach webcam is mounted at the Riptide Restaurant above the main beach and is sponsored by Wolf Security, so it gives a live look at the surf, the sand and how busy the beach is. Rocks run out into the sea along this shore: in 1895 the steamer Fascadale was wrecked on rocks off Southbroom beach on her way to Lisbon. The village grew up around tourism after it was proclaimed in 1933; the Southbroom Hotel opened in 1935 and its tidal pool, still known as Granny's Pool, followed two years later. Within a short drive are four more beaches, Umkobi at the Kaba mouth, Marina Beach, San Lameer and Trafalgar, and Marina and Trafalgar have held Blue Flag status for years. The Mpenjati Lagoon Nature Reserve lies a little further south. Arrive on the R61 toll road or along the slower R620 coastal road through Ramsgate.
