Atlantic Avenue Beach is a Town of East Hampton ocean beach in Amagansett, at the end of Atlantic Avenue south of Montauk Highway, and locals often call it Coast Guard Beach after the old Amagansett Coast Guard station nearby. During World War II, in June 1942, German saboteurs landed by U-boat on the beach near here; a young Coast Guardsman on patrol met them, and the plot was broken within days. Today the beach is a wide, busy summer beach with lifeguards, a concession stand and restrooms, and it is popular with surfers and families alike. This live beach cam from Hamptons.com looks over the sand and the lineup. The shore faces south into open Atlantic, so the waves come from tropical storms and hurricanes in late summer and fall, nor'easters and summer wind swell; north winds are offshore. The sandbars change from year to year and rip currents form when the surf is up, so swim inside the flags. Parking in summer requires an East Hampton town permit or a daily fee on weekdays. Water temperature ranges from about 5 °C in winter to the low 20s °C in August.
