Foster Memorial Beach, known to most people simply as Long Beach, is a Town of Southampton beach on Long Beach Road between Sag Harbor and Noyack, on the north side of the South Fork. It is a long, narrow strip of sand on Noyack Bay, part of the Peconic Bay system, with the road running right behind it, and it is the opposite of the surf beaches on the ocean side: the water is shallow, warmer in summer and protected from ocean swell. That makes it a favorite with families and with windsurfers and kiteboarders, who use the steady southwest summer sea breeze blowing along and across the shore. This live cam from Hamptons.com looks over the bay and the sailors. On a southwest or west wind the water here gets choppy but stays flat enough for beginners, while north winds blow straight across the bay onto the beach. There are lifeguards in summer, and parking along the road needs a Southampton permit in season. Water temperature in the bay reaches about 23 to 25 °C in August, warmer than the ocean, and falls to around 3 to 5 °C in winter. Sunsets over the bay draw a crowd on summer evenings.
