Hampton Beach is New Hampshire's busiest summer resort, on the state's short Atlantic coast between Great Boar's Head and the mouth of the Hampton River. Hampton Beach State Park covers the sand, and Ocean Boulevard behind it is a lively strip of arcades, fried-dough stands, motels and the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom, a concert venue that has stood on the beachfront since 1899. In the middle of the beach is the Seashell Stage, where free concerts and fireworks are held in summer, and the official live cam on this page is the Hampton Beach Seashell webcam, looking south along the sand. Every June the beach hosts a well-known sand-sculpting competition. The water is cold even in high summer, so swimming is brisk, and a wetsuit is essential for surfing for most of the year. The beach picks up east and north-east swell from autumn and winter nor'easters and from hurricanes passing well offshore, with a westerly wind blowing offshore; New Hampshire's better-known surf spots, such as the reef at North Hampton, are a short drive north. Lifeguards are on duty in summer. The ocean is about 4 °C in February and around 19 °C in August.
