Izu Shirahama is the white-sand beach of the Shirahama district of Shimoda, on the Sagami-nada side of Izu, in Shizuoka, where National Route 135 runs along the shore. The beach is divided by Shirahama Shrine: north of it lies the central beach, and to the south the Shirahama Ohama bathing beach, about 770 metres wide and 90 metres deep, the largest sandy beach on the peninsula. White sand and clear, emerald-green water give it a resort feel, and swimmers and surfers come from all over Japan; the official swimming season runs from mid-July to the end of August, and about 300 paid parking spaces open in summer. It is one of nine bathing beaches in Shimoda and lies about ten minutes by car from Izukyu-Shimoda Station, with buses to the Shirahama Kaigan stop. This beach webcam, titled Shirahama surfcam, is streamed by the channel mariner1173 from the hillside at one end and takes in the full arc of sand and the line of breaking waves. Facing east towards the open Pacific, the beach picks up swell that the west coast of Izu misses, so check the surf forecast and wind before driving down.
