Cottesloe Beach is Perth's best-known swimming beach, about 11 kilometres west of the city centre, with the Indiana Tea House pavilion, Norfolk Island pines along the grassed terraces and a groyne that is a favourite place to watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean. Each March it hosts Sculpture by the Sea, an outdoor art exhibition along the sand. The beach faces west and is protected from much of the swell by Rottnest Island and by offshore reefs, so it is usually calm enough for swimming, snorkelling around the groyne and stand-up paddling. Surf does reach Cottesloe on stronger south-west swells: waves break along the beach and at reef breaks to the north and south, such as Cables Artificial Surf Reef and the Cove, which are better suited to experienced surfers. Easterly morning winds blow offshore, and on summer afternoons the south-westerly sea breeze usually arrives. The Cottesloe surf life saving club, one of the oldest in Western Australia, patrols the beach in season. Water temperatures range from about 18 to 23 °C. See today's forecast below.
