Lennox Head is a coastal village in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, between Ballina and Byron Bay. Its headland shelters one of the best-known right-hand point breaks in Australia: on a big south to south-east swell, waves wrap around the boulder-covered point and peel for a long way towards the village. The point is fast and heavy, breaks over rocks and is suitable only for experienced surfers, and getting in and out over the boulders is part of the challenge. North of the headland, Seven Mile Beach runs towards Ballina's neighbours and offers sand-bottom peaks for all levels; it faces east and picks up most swell. The headland is also a well-known hang-gliding and paragliding launch. Lake Ainsworth, a freshwater tea-tree lake just behind the beach, is popular with families and for stand-up paddling. South and south-westerly winds blow offshore at the point, which is why autumn and winter, with their southerly swells, are the main season.
