Narrabeen is a long beach on Sydney's Northern Beaches running north from Collaroy to the entrance of Narrabeen Lagoon, and its northern end, North Narrabeen, is one of the best-known surf breaks in Australia. There the sand that the lagoon pushes out builds a left-hand bank that peels down the beach on an east or north-east swell, and the break has hosted professional surfing contests for decades. It gets crowded and the take-off zone is competitive, so North Narrabeen's main peak is best left to experienced surfers, while the beach further south, towards Narrabeen and Collaroy, offers easier peaks for everyone else. At Narrabeen, westerly winds blow offshore. The lagoon mouth produces a strong current at the north end, especially on a run-out tide, and swimmers should stick to the patrolled flags in front of the surf clubs. After heavy rain the lagoon can carry stormwater onto the beach. Autumn and winter generally bring the most consistent combination of swell and offshore wind.
