The Plage du Sillon runs for about three kilometres from the ramparts of Saint-Malo's walled town north-east towards Rochebonne, with the Chaussée du Sillon promenade behind it. Saint-Malo has one of the largest tidal ranges in Europe, well over ten metres on the biggest spring tides, so the beach changes completely through the day: at high water the sea reaches the line of wooden breakwater posts and the sea wall, at low water there is a vast flat of firm sand and the Fort National and the Grand Bé become islands you can walk to. That open sand and the westerly winds off the Channel make the Sillon a regular spot for windsurfers and kitesurfers, and for land yachts at low tide; the north-west swells that sometimes reach it also bring surfable waves. Watch the incoming tide, which fills the flat quickly, and check the local rules for kites, which change with the season. Sea temperature is around 10 °C in late winter and about 18 °C in August.
