The Grande Plage is a sheltered south-facing crescent inside the bay and rarely has a wave; the surf is at Tanchet and Sauveterre around the headland, which face west and pick up the same swell as the rest of the Vendée. A working port town rather than a resort, so it stays alive out of season, and the Vendée Globe start line is the harbour here.
