The Düne is the small, low sister island of Helgoland, Germany's only offshore island far out in the German Bight, about 1.5 kilometres east of the red sandstone main island. A ferry boat runs across from the main harbour in a few minutes, and the island has the bathing beaches that the rocky main island lacks, plus Helgoland's small airfield. The live webcam looks from the main island over the harbour and across the water to the Düne and its beaches. The Düne is famous for its seals: grey seals and harbour seals haul out on the sand all year, and grey seals give birth here in winter, so visitors are asked to keep at least 30 metres away and dogs are not allowed. Out in the middle of the North Sea, the island gets every wind direction straight off the water, and in winter storms the waves wash high over the beaches. In summer the sandy north and south beaches are guarded for swimming; the water here, surrounded by open sea, often feels clearer than at the mainland coast.
