Wangerooge is the easternmost of the inhabited East Frisian Islands, a car-free island reached by ferry from Harlesiel on the mainland and then by the island's own narrow-gauge railway into the village. The live beach webcam looks over the main beach on the north side of the island, a wide stretch of sand divided by long stone groynes that hold it in place against the tide. The North Sea arrives here only after crossing the shallow banks offshore, so the waves are usually small, which makes the main beach a family beach rather than a surf spot. The real hazard is the tide: the channels at both ends of the island run with strong currents, and swimming is only advised at the guarded section in front of the village during the season. Wind is the constant companion, mostly from the west and south-west, and the long beach is good for walking, kite flying and watching the shipping lanes to Wilhelmshaven and the Weser.
