Hiddensee is a long, narrow, car-free island off the west coast of Rügen, reached by passenger ferries from Schaprode on Rügen and from Stralsund. Vitte is the largest of its villages, in the middle of the island, and from there paths cross the narrow heath and dunes to the west beach, which faces the open Baltic. The live webcam looks from the dunes over the beach and the sea. With no buildings on the shore and only bicycles and horse-drawn carts on the island, the west beach is one of the quietest on the German Baltic coast even in summer. It faces west, straight into the prevailing wind, so westerly and south-westerly winds blow onshore and bring the waves, and wooden groynes along parts of the beach slow the erosion that eats steadily into this side of the island. The lifeguarded bathing area at Vitte is the safest place to swim; elsewhere the beach is unsupervised. To the north rise the hills of the Dornbusch with the island's lighthouse, and the playwright Gerhart Hauptmann's summer house in Kloster is now a museum. The water off the west beach is cool until June and warmest in August. Check the Hiddensee webcam and the forecast below before crossing over.
