Playa Marlín lies on the open Caribbean side of Cancún's hotel zone, roughly halfway down the long strip of Boulevard Kukulcán, near the Kukulcán Plaza shopping centre. Unlike the bay beaches closer to downtown, this stretch faces east straight into the trade winds, so there is almost always some chop and a shorebreak, and on windy days the lifeguards fly the red flag and currents pull along the beach. It is better for walking, bodyboarding and watching the colour of the water than for easy swimming with small children. Playa Ballenas continues to the south and Playa Chac Mool to the north, all part of the same white sand that was rebuilt with dredged sand after Hurricane Wilma stripped it in 2005. Sea turtles nest along these beaches in summer, and from spring into late summer sargassum seaweed can arrive in large mats. The live beach cam on this page is mounted at the Live Aqua resort and looks south along the sand, so it is a quick way to check the surf, the flags and the seaweed before you go. Water temperature runs from about 26 °C in February to 29 °C in September.
