South of San Miguel, the only town on Cozumel, the coast road runs past a string of hotels and beach clubs known as the southern hotel zone. This is the island's west coast, which faces the mainland across the Cozumel Channel, so the easterly trade winds arrive here after crossing the island and the sea in front of the hotels is usually calm. Much of the shore is ironshore, the sharp limestone rock of the Yucatán coast, with small sandy coves and swimming platforms between the rocks; the cam on this page looks at one of those coves from the Presidente InterContinental, which is how its stream is titled by Webcams de México. Further south the reefs of the Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park begin, and the channel carries a steady northbound current that drift divers rely on and snorkellers should respect when they swim out from shore. The large cruise piers lie along this same coast between the town and the hotels. Passenger ferries reach Cozumel from Playa del Carmen in about 45 minutes. The water is warm all year, around 26 °C in February and 29 °C in late summer, and hurricane season runs from June to November.
