Playa Sábalo is the beach of Mazatlán's Zona Dorada, the Golden Zone, where the hotels, condos and restaurants line Avenida Camarón Sábalo north of the old town. It faces west onto the Pacific near the mouth of the Gulf of California, so sunsets drop straight into the sea and the three islands offshore, Isla de Pájaros, Isla de Venados and Isla de Lobos, make the skyline recognisable on any camera. Boats and kayaks head out from this shore to Isla de Venados, a protected island with small coves for snorkelling. The beach itself is long and sandy with a beach break that picks up south swells in summer and north-west swells in winter; the better-known surf spots of Mazatlán are further south in the old town, at Olas Altas and Los Pinos, but Sábalo has plenty of rideable days for bodyboards and beginners. An onshore breeze from the north-west tends to build in the afternoon. The water is noticeably cooler here than on Mexico's southern Pacific coast: about 21–22 °C in February and March, climbing to around 30 °C in August and September.
