New Brighton is the main surf beach of Christchurch, on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island, about 8 kilometres east of the city centre. Its long, straight beach is part of Pegasus Bay, which runs for tens of kilometres from the Waimakariri River mouth south to the estuary of the Avon and Heathcote rivers, and it is backed by dunes and pine plantations. New Brighton Pier, rebuilt in 1997 and repaired after the 2011 earthquakes, reaches 300 metres out to sea and is the beach's landmark; the library and a hot-pool complex stand beside it. The beach faces east and picks up swell from the north-east round to the south-east, breaking over shifting sandbanks; the area either side of the pier is the most popular, and the waves are usually suitable for beginners and intermediate surfers. Westerly winds blow offshore, often during warm nor'west days, while the cold easterly sea breeze is common on summer afternoons. Kitesurfers also use the open beach away from the patrolled area.
