Paal 17 is the main beach of De Koog, the seaside village on the west coast of Texel, the largest of the Dutch Wadden Islands. The beaches of Texel are numbered by the posts (palen) set every kilometre along the North Sea shore, and Paal 17 is the busiest of them, with a beach pavilion, lifeguard post and the village's shops and restaurants just behind the dunes. Ferries cross to Texel from Den Helder in about twenty minutes, and the Ecomare seal sanctuary and nature centre is a short way inland from De Koog. The live beach webcam looks over the pavilion, the sand and the open sea. The beach faces west, straight into the prevailing wind and the North Sea swell, so on a westerly or south-westerly day the sea is lively and the sandbanks give waves for surfing and bodyboarding; an easterly wind blows offshore and smooths the surface. Rip currents run out through the gaps between the sandbanks and are the main danger for swimmers, so swim only near the lifeguard post in the season.
