Vlieland is the quietest of the inhabited Dutch Wadden Islands, with a single village, Oost-Vlieland, and almost no cars: visitors arrive by ferry from Harlingen in Friesland and leave their cars on the mainland. A long North Sea beach runs along the whole north-west side of the island, and at its western end it opens out into the Vliehors, a vast sand plain partly used as a military range. The live webcam is mounted at 't Badhuys, the beach pavilion at the end of the road from the village, and looks over the terrace and the wide beach to the sea; the large off-road truck that takes visitors out to the Vliehors often passes through the view. The beach faces north-west, so westerly to northerly winds blow onshore and bring waves from the open North Sea, while south-easterly winds blow offshore. Surfers and kitesurfers use the beach on windy days, but it is exposed and remote, and strong currents run along it and in the channels at both ends of the island, so stay close to the pavilion and swim only where lifeguards are on duty in summer. The dunes and woods behind the beach are crossed by cycle paths. The sea temperature at Vlieland is highest in August. Check the Vlieland beach webcam and the forecast below.
