Hope Cove is a former fishing village in the South Hams of Devon, made up of Outer Hope and Inner Hope, each with its own small sandy beach looking west across Bigbury Bay. The headland of Bolt Tail shelters the cove from the south-west, and a short harbour wall at Outer Hope adds more protection, so the water is often calm and clear even when the open coast is lively. That makes it a favourite for swimming, snorkelling around the rocks, paddleboarding and kayaking, and for families with small children. A north-westerly wind blows straight in and can make it choppy, and big winter swells do reach the beaches. At Inner Hope the old lifeboat station and a cluster of thatched cottages sit above the slipway; at Outer Hope there are a couple of pubs and cafés and a car park on the hill. The South West Coast Path climbs from the village onto Bolt Tail and continues towards Salcombe, and Thurlestone's beaches lie a short walk to the north.
