Blackpool Sands, not to be confused with the Lancashire resort, is a sheltered cove on Start Bay in South Devon, just south of the village of Stoke Fleming and a few miles from Dartmouth. Its fine shingle beach is framed by steep wooded hillsides of pine and evergreen trees, which give it an almost Mediterranean look on a sunny day, and the clear water deepens quickly from the shore. Facing east, the cove is protected from the prevailing south-westerly winds and Atlantic swell, so the sea is usually calm, which makes it ideal for swimming, paddleboarding and kayaking; an easterly wind, by contrast, sends small waves straight onto the stones. The beach is privately managed, with a paid car park, a café, equipment hire and lifeguards in the summer season, and it has a long record of Blue Flag awards; dogs are restricted in summer. The A379 coast road runs just behind it, and the coast path links north to Dartmouth Castle and south along Slapton Sands. Water temperatures in Start Bay peak at about 17 °C in late summer.
