Portland Harbour, between Weymouth and the Isle of Portland in Dorset, is one of the largest man-made harbours in the world. Its massive stone breakwaters, built in the nineteenth century, enclose a broad expanse of water on the north and east, while the shingle bank of Chesil Beach and the causeway to Portland close it off to the south-west. The result is a huge area of flat or lightly chopped water exposed to the wind but sheltered from the sea, which has made it one of Britain's best-known venues for windsurfing, kitesurfing, wing foiling and dinghy sailing. The National Sailing Academy at Osprey Quay hosted the sailing events of the 2012 Olympics, and several watersports centres and schools operate around the harbour shore. Strong winds from the south-west funnel across Chesil Beach, while north-easterlies blow in across the open water from Weymouth; which shore is safe to launch from depends on the direction, and shipping and moorings use parts of the harbour, so newcomers should take local advice first.
