Sidmouth is an elegant Regency resort on the East Devon stretch of the Jurassic Coast, where the little River Sid reaches the sea between towering red sandstone cliffs. The main town beach in front of the Esplanade is mostly shingle, with sand appearing as the tide drops, and a line of offshore rock breakwaters protects the seafront from winter storms. West of the town, past the Chit Rocks shown on the live webcam, steps lead down to Jacob's Ladder beach, which has more sand at low tide. The water is usually calm enough for swimming and paddling in settled weather, but southerly gales throw big waves against the sea wall, and the cliffs east of the river are actively eroding, so keep away from their base. Sidmouth is a resort for walking, swimming and a day by the sea rather than a surf or kite spot; it hosts a well-known folk festival every August. Parking is spread across the town and the coast path climbs out over the cliffs in both directions. The sea reaches about 17 °C in late summer and drops to around 10 °C in early spring.
