Redcar is a seaside town on the North Sea coast at the mouth of Tees Bay, with miles of flat sand running from Coatham in the west past the town centre towards Marske. Offshore, the turbines of the Teesside wind farm stand in a line on the horizon, and the seafront is marked by the Redcar Beacon, a tall modern viewing tower, and a wide promenade with steps down to the sand. The beach is broken up by low rocky scars that run out to sea, and these reefs and the sandbanks between them catch North Sea swells from the north and north-east, giving Redcar some of the most varied surf on this coast for those who know it; a south-westerly wind is offshore. At low tide the scars uncover large rock pools, but on a rising tide the water fills in around them quickly. The beach found fame in the film Atonement, whose long Dunkirk scene was shot here. Redcar's water is cold, reaching only about 14–15 °C in August and falling to around 6–7 °C in late winter.
