Washington Park is the lakefront park of Michigan City, Indiana, at the southern tip of Lake Michigan, about an hour east of Chicago. It has a long public beach, a zoo on the wooded dune behind it, a marina at the mouth of Trail Creek, and the Michigan City East Pierhead Light, a white lighthouse joined to the shore by a catwalk on the breakwater. This live beach cam is run by Access LaPorte County Media and looks over the beach and the lake. On clear days the Chicago skyline is visible across the water to the northwest. Because the lake is long and open to the north, strong north and northwest winds pile up waves at this end, and fall storms produce surf that local surfers ride near the breakwater; on most summer days the water is calm and shallow near shore, good for swimming. The pier and breakwater are dangerous in high waves, with structural currents running along them, and the beach uses a flag system for swimming conditions; the Indiana shoreline has had many drownings in rough surf. The water reaches about 22 to 24 °C in August, and the shore ices up in winter. Indiana Dunes National Park begins a few miles west. Parking is paid for non-residents in summer.
