South Haven is a lakeshore town in southwest Michigan, where the Black River enters Lake Michigan about halfway between Chicago and Grand Rapids, and it has been a summer resort since the days of steamships from Chicago. The river mouth is lined by two piers, and the red South Haven South Pier Light at the end of the south pier is the town's landmark. South Beach, beside the south pier, is the main public beach, a broad strip of sand with a concession stand and restrooms, and this live beach cam from the City of South Haven looks over it. The lake is usually calm in summer, good for swimming, paddling and families; in fall and on stormy days wind swell from the southwest, west or north rolls in, and local surfers ride it by the piers. Lake Michigan's piers are dangerous in high waves: water and currents run strongly along the pier walls, and rip currents form on the beaches beside them, so heed the beach flag system and stay off the pier when the waves break over it. The lake warms to about 21 to 23 °C in August and ice can line the shore in winter. Parking at South Beach is paid in summer.
