Park Point, also called Minnesota Point, is the long, narrow sandbar that separates Duluth Harbor from the open water of Lake Superior at the western tip of the lake. Together with Wisconsin Point on the far side of the Superior Entry, it forms one of the longest freshwater sand spits in the world, and the Minnesota side alone runs about six miles from the Aerial Lift Bridge to the old lighthouse ruins near the end. The lake side is almost one continuous sand beach backed by dunes and pines, with houses along Minnesota Avenue and a recreation area and beach house near the end of the road. This live beach cam, from the Duluth Harbor Cam family of streams, is mounted at a bed and breakfast on the point and looks out over the beach and the lake. Lake Superior is the coldest of the Great Lakes: even in August the water is often only 10 to 15 °C, and a northeast wind can push colder water to the shore. Strong northeast storms, mostly in fall, build big waves on this end of the lake that local surfers ride in thick wetsuits, and the same waves create dangerous rip currents. The Lift Bridge is the only road onto the point.
