Cijin Beach is the black-sand beach on the seaward side of Cijin, the long, narrow island that shelters the harbour of Kaohsiung in southern Taiwan. Cijin was a sandbar peninsula joined to the main island at its southern end until 1967, when the cutting of Kaohsiung's second harbour entrance turned it into an island; the cross-harbour tunnel opened in 1984, but most visitors still arrive by the short ferry from Gushan. The bathing beach was founded in July 1923, during Japanese rule, by a local association, and by 1937 it had rest houses and tea houses. Today it is run by the Kaohsiung city tourism bureau and is open from April to October, and since 2015 it has hosted an annual Cijin black sand art festival. Behind the beach run a seaside park, a cycle path, the old fishing quarter with its seafood street, the Cihou lighthouse and fort, and the Rainbow Church installation.
