Carnac is known worldwide for its standing stones, the thousands of Neolithic menhirs in rows north of the town, but its seaside quarter, Carnac-Plage, is one of the busiest family resorts in southern Brittany. The Grande Plage is a two-kilometre stretch of fine sand facing south into the Bay of Quiberon. The Quiberon peninsula to the west and the islands of Houat and Hoëdic offshore keep out most of the Atlantic swell, so the water is calm and shallow, which suits swimming, paddleboarding and the sailing schools that use the bay; south-westerly winds bring a little chop and the best sailing breeze. The tidal range is smaller than on the north coast of Brittany but still noticeable, and the beach narrows at high tide. Behind it runs a seafront boulevard with hotels, and salt marshes lie just inland. The sea is about 11 °C in late winter and close to 20 °C in August, among the warmer water on the Breton coast.
