La Baule's beach is a sweep of fine sand about nine kilometres long, running from Pornichet in the east to Le Pouliguen in the west, with a seafront promenade of hotels and apartment blocks behind it. The bay faces south and is closed off at both ends by rocky points, so the swell that reaches it is usually small and the beach suits families, swimming and sailing; the Yacht Club de La Baule and several beach clubs line the sand. The tide matters here: at low water the beach becomes very wide and the sea draws far back, and on a spring tide the difference is several metres. Onshore south-westerlies can bring a short, choppy sea, while northerly winds leave the bay flat and warm in the sun. The sea temperature goes from about 10 °C in February to roughly 20 °C in August.
