Heiligenhafen is a fishing and holiday town on the Baltic coast of Schleswig-Holstein, just across the water from the island of Fehmarn. Its beach lies on the Steinwarder, a spit of land between the open Baltic and the harbour lagoon, lined with holiday apartments and a long promenade, while the Graswarder spit next to it is a bird reserve. The live webcam, run from a holiday flat above the beach, looks out over the Steinwarder beach and the sea towards Fehmarn. The town's pier, the Erlebnis-Seebrücke, reaches out into the bay from the Steinwarder. Facing north into the Baltic, the beach gets wind waves rather than real swell; northerly and north-westerly winds blow onshore and roughen the sea, while southerly winds leave the water flat and calm close to the beach. The shallow water and steady breezes of this corner of the Baltic draw windsurfers, kitesurfers and stand-up paddlers to the area, with Fehmarn's well-known spots a short drive away. Swimming is easy in summer on the sandy, gently shelving beach, which is watched by lifeguards in season. The Baltic is at its warmest in late July and August.
