Utersum is a small village on the west coast of Föhr, and its beach is the island's sunset beach, looking across the Wadden Sea to the dunes of Amrum a few kilometres away. The live beach webcam is run by the municipality from the guest house above the beach and shows the sand, the grassy dune edge and the water stretching towards Amrum. Because Amrum and its huge sandbank shelter this side of Föhr from the open North Sea, there is no surf here; what you get instead is a calm, gently shelving beach that suits children, swimmers and stand-up paddlers at high tide. The tide still rules the day: at low water the sea retreats a long way, and the channels between Föhr and Amrum carry strong currents, so stay close to the beach and never try to walk across to the neighbouring island without an official guide. Westerly winds blow straight onshore at Utersum, and on breezy days the beach is popular for walks and kite flying. The village has holiday flats, a few cafés and a bus to Wyk.
