Wyk is the main town of Föhr, the North Frisian island that markets itself as the 'Frisian Caribbean' because of its mild, sheltered climate. Ferries from Dagebüll land at Wyk harbour, a few minutes' walk from the Sandwall, the tree-lined promenade above the town beach that the live webcam looks over, with its thatched pavilion, beach chairs and the Wadden Sea beyond. Föhr lies in the lee of Amrum and Sylt, so no ocean swell reaches Wyk: the water in front of the beach is calm, shallow and strongly tidal, rising and falling by around three metres twice a day. At low tide the sea draws back across the mudflats, and at high tide the beach is good for paddling, stand-up paddling and relaxed windsurfing in a south-easterly or southerly breeze. The flats themselves are part of the Wadden Sea National Park and should only be crossed with a guide, because the incoming tide fills the channels fast. Wyk's south beach continues past the town towards the Wadden shore. Sea temperature warms faster here than on the open coast in early summer.
