The Amaharashi Coast lies in the north of Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, on Toyama Bay, and few Japanese shorelines appear in more photographs. Small islands and rocks such as Oiwa and Meiwa stand just offshore, and on clear days the 3,000-metre peaks of the Tateyama range rise behind the bay, snow-covered for much of the year. The coast is part of Noto Peninsula Quasi-National Park, is listed among Japan's 100 best beaches and lies within a prefectural wildlife sanctuary; in 2014 Toyama Bay joined the Most Beautiful Bays in the World club. Near Amaharashi Station stands Yoshitsune rock, linked to the legend of the warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune waiting for the rain to clear, which gave the place its name. In winter, sea smoke over the bay and the New Year sunrise draw crowds of photographers, and the JR Himi Line runs right along the shore between Etchu-Kokubu and Amaharashi.
