Camogli is a fishing village on the western side of the Portofino promontory, on the Gulf of Paradise east of Genoa, and its seafront is one of the classic images of Liguria: tall, narrow houses painted in ochre, red and yellow standing directly above a pebble beach, with the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta and the Castello della Dragonara on a rocky spur at the end. The beach is pebbly and the water deepens quickly and is very clear, which makes it good for swimming and snorkelling rather than paddling with small children. It faces west and south-west, so it is open to the libeccio, which can throw waves up to the promenade in winter storms, while summer days are mostly calm. Behind and around the village lies the Portofino Regional Natural Park, crossed by footpaths to San Fruttuoso, whose abbey is also reached by boat from the harbour. Every May the village holds the Sagra del Pesce, frying fish for thousands in a giant pan. Sea temperature is about 13 °C in late winter and 24 to 25 °C in August.
