Freshwater West is a wild, dune-backed beach on the south-west coast of Pembrokeshire, within the national park, and it is generally reckoned the most consistent surf spot in Wales. Facing west-south-west straight into the Atlantic, it catches swell that misses almost everywhere else nearby, and it has hosted Welsh national surfing championships. That exposure comes at a price: the beach is notorious for powerful rip currents and heavy shore dumps, signs warn that bathing is dangerous, and it should be treated as a spot for experienced surfers rather than for swimming. The best days come with a north-easterly or easterly wind and a moderate swell; at size the waves close out. Rocky outcrops split the beach into sections, with different banks at the northern and southern ends. There are only basic facilities: car parks behind the dunes, a seasonal food van and the restored thatched hut once used for drying seaweed. Film fans know the beach from Harry Potter and Robin Hood, both shot here. The Castlemartin military range lies next door, and the coast road can close during firing.
