Warnemünde is the seaside district of Rostock, at the mouth of the river Warnow on the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and its beach is one of the widest on the German Baltic coast. The sand runs west from the harbour entrance and the long west pier, past the 1898 lighthouse and the curved concrete roof of the Teepott, along a promenade lined with hotels. The live webcam, run from the Hotel Neptun high above the beach, looks over the sand and the open sea; on many days cruise ships and ferries can be seen heading in and out of the Warnow. The beach faces north-west, so westerly to northerly winds blow onshore and bring the waves, which in autumn and winter storms can be big enough for surfing and wave sailing on the Baltic; southerly and south-easterly winds blow offshore and flatten the water. The west pier and the harbour entrance are off-limits for water sports because of shipping. In summer, lifeguard towers along the beach guard the swimming areas, and the town's old quarter by the Alter Strom canal is a short walk away. The water is warmest in late July and August.
