Hasaki is the southern end of the Kashima-nada coast in Ibaraki Prefecture, at the mouth of the Tone River opposite Choshi in Chiba. The former town of Hasaki was merged into Kamisu in 2005. From Oarai south to Kamisu the shore is one long sandy beach facing the open Pacific, and because dams have cut the sand supply from the Naka and Tone rivers it is eroding, so artificial headlands have been built along it. Offshore, the warm Kuroshio and the cold Oyashio currents meet, making these waters rich fishing grounds; finless porpoises are seen near the coast, and loggerhead turtles nest on the beaches. Hasaki beach is one of the listed bathing beaches of the Kashima-nada coast and a regular surf spot thanks to its exposure. Rather than a tourist webcam, this is the live sand-beach camera of the Port and Airport Research Institute, whose coastal research station at Hasaki studies waves and beach change; its aerial-style view shows the research pier, the sand and the surf. On a coast this open, swell arrives from typhoons, winter lows and northerly winds alike; our surf outlook, swell direction and wind readings are the place to start.
