Hebara is a beach district of Katsuura, a small city on the south-east coast of the Boso Peninsula in Chiba, about 70 to 80 km from central Tokyo. Two-thirds of Katsuura is hilly, and the Boso hills drop to sandy ground only near the coast, and Hebara is an open sandy beach on this stretch of coast. Because the warm Kuroshio Current runs close offshore, summers and winters here are mild and the annual temperature range is narrow. Surfers know the spot as Hebara Point, and two live cams watch it: a sunset camera at the car park and this one, Hebara (1) from wowpowcom, which looks over the road and the vegetation towards the sea and the surf line. Open to the Pacific on its south-eastern side, the beach picks up swell that is blocked from the Tokyo Bay beaches, and typhoon season in late summer and autumn can bring powerful surf. The nearest railway is the JR Sotobo Line at Katsuura.
