Shirarahama is the pocket beach of Shirahama in Wakayama, on Kanayama Bay between the headlands of Gongenzaki to the north and Yuzaki to the south; the town's name, white beach, comes from it. The sand is almost pure quartz, about 90 per cent silica, and was once dug and shipped to Osaka for glassmaking. As development cut off the natural sand supply, the beach began to shrink in the late Showa era, and since 1989 Wakayama Prefecture has replenished it with sand brought from near Perth in Western Australia, together with wind fences and a submerged breakwater. Shirarahama is one of the leading bathing beaches of the Kansai region and has been twinned with Waikiki Beach since 2000. The season has traditionally opened in early May, the earliest on Honshu, though in recent years a shortage of lifeguards has pushed it to July; shark nets go up every summer. Hot springs line the beach, fireworks are held on 30 July and 10 August, and illuminations run in winter. This webcam is the town's official live camera. The bay is sheltered and calm, so check the wind and sea temperature here rather than the surf.
