Pikes Beach is an ocean beach on Dune Road in the Village of Westhampton Dunes, the strip of barrier island west of Westhampton Beach on Long Island's south shore. Westhampton Dunes has an unusual history: storms in the early 1990s breached the island here and washed away scores of houses, a lawsuit by the homeowners led to a federal beach rebuilding program, and the village incorporated in 1993. Pikes Beach is managed by Suffolk County and is a smaller, quieter beach than its neighbors, with lifeguards in summer and limited parking. This live beach cam from Hamptons.com looks over the beach and the surf. The island faces south toward open ocean, so it takes swell from tropical systems in late summer and fall and from winter nor'easters, while north winds blow offshore. The sand here is replenished by dredging projects, and the bars it forms change after every big storm; rip currents are common when the waves are up. Moriches Inlet lies a few miles to the west and has strong tidal currents. Water temperature ranges from about 5 °C in late winter to the low 20s °C in August. In summer parking may require a permit.
