Ponquogue Beach is a Town of Southampton ocean beach in Hampton Bays, reached by the Ponquogue Bridge across Shinnecock Bay and Dune Road. It has a pavilion with showers, food and lifeguards in summer, and parking requires a town permit or a daily fee in season. Just to the east lies Shinnecock Inlet, whose jetties produce some of the most powerful and consistent surf on Long Island; the beach itself, with its sandbar peaks, is the easier option and is popular with local surfers and bodyboarders when the inlet is crowded or too big. The south-facing shore catches south and south-east swells from hurricanes in late summer and autumn and east swells from nor'easters, and it is best with a north or north-west wind; in summer the south-west sea breeze often makes it choppy by afternoon. The live cam on this page is Hamptons.com's Ponquogue Beach surf cam, looking over the boardwalk path and the beach. Rip currents form near the inlet and between the bars. Behind the dunes, Dune Road runs along the barrier with views over the bay, and the old Ponquogue lighthouse site lies across the water. The ocean is about 4 °C in winter and 22 °C in August.
