Kiyoishihama is a beach on Iki, the island group in the Tsushima Strait between Kyushu and the Korean Peninsula that forms the city of Iki in Nagasaki Prefecture. The islands are the eroded summit of an ancient basaltic volcano, and the whole of Iki lies inside Iki-Tsushima Quasi-National Park. Iki has a long history: Chinese chronicles of the third century mention a country called Iki, the Yayoi-period settlement of Harunotsuji is one of the largest found in Japan, and the islands suffered in the Mongol invasions of 1274 and 1281. Kiyoishihama sits on the east side of the island near Ashibe, one of the three ferry ports linking Iki to Fukuoka and Karatsu, and is a sandy bathing beach with clear water. This live camera is run by Iki Cable Television on its channel Iki-koku Live Camera, named after the ancient country, and its thumbnail shows the beach, the surf and a high-speed ferry passing offshore. The strait can be rough when the north-westerly monsoon blows in winter, while summer days are calmer and suit swimming and snorkelling. The camera, the wind forecast and the sea temperature here show what to expect before you take the ferry over.
