Hitotsuba is the long, straight beach on the northern shore of Miyazaki city on Kyushu, backed by a belt of pine forest and by the Hitotsuba toll road that runs parallel to the coast. Behind the sand lies a calm tidal inlet, the Hitotsuba inlet, and further north stand the tower and convention centre of the Phoenix Seagaia Resort among the trees. The beach faces the Hyuga-nada to the east and catches the same swells as Kizakihama and Aoshima further south, from typhoon systems between August and October and from winter and spring depressions tracking south of Japan, with sandbar beach-break peaks along its length. Miyazaki has a humid subtropical climate, hot and humid in summer and cool in winter, and the city is particularly prone to heavy typhoon rain.
